The Giants won last week without two of their most valuable offensive pieces. They might have to try and do it again Sunday.
Plaxico Burress will not play against the Redskins and running back Brandon Jacobs has been deemed "questionable" for the NFC East game.
"He's progressing, no doubt," Tom Coughlin said of Burress on Friday before the official announcement that he will sit out. "He's getting better. He is."
Just not quickly enough. Burress will miss Sunday's game in Washington with a sore hamstring. The wide receiver has not missed a game for health reasons since November 2006. Even last year, when he missed nearly every practice of the season with an ankle injury, he was available each Sunday.
Burress, who injured the hamstring in the middle of last week, played one series against the Cardinals on Sunday before taking himself out of the game. He was not available for comment this week. Domenik Hixon will start in his place.
As for Jacobs, barring a setback in the rehab of his knee injury, he'll most likely play Sunday. He had every intention of going last week, but when he woke with swelling in his knee on the morning of the game, he told coaches he couldn't go. He has practiced with full participation the last two days.
"Jacobs did it all," Coughlin said after Friday's workout.
Coughlin was asked about the status of several players on the injury report. "The list is too long to remember," he said. But of Jacobs' availability for Sunday, Coughlin smiled. "He is listed as questionable," he said. "I remember that one."
Perhaps nudging Jacobs toward participation Sunday is the status of fellow running back Ahmad Bradshaw, who has missed all three practices this week with a stiff neck and also is questionable. The Giants also listed defensive tackle Fred Robbins as questionable. He too has missed all workouts this week with a shoulder injury. He's also been playing through hand injuries for several weeks.
Notes & quotes: DE Jerome McDougle (knee), DE Justin Tuck (lower leg) and WR Hixon (ankle) are listed as probable. Tuck missed practice Thursday but said he was fine Friday. "I was being a crybaby [Thursday], that was all," he said ... LB Jonathan Goff (hamstring) is listed as out ... DE Mathias Kiwanuka called the final play by Redskins LT Chris Samuels in the last game between the Giants and Redskins a dirty play. "That was the last image I had, the last play, the last image I had for the whole game, so yeah, it will be in the back of my mind," Kiwanuka said of the takedown by Samuels that injured his ankle. "But I'm not going to do anything stupid."
