New York Giants Inside Slant 2009-05-08
It happens every spring after the annual NFL Draft, when every team in the league begins to boast about the sound choices it made. You have heard the phrases become cliches, everything from a fifth-rounder they had projected much higher to a physical specimen who needs to overcome work ethic questions.

But now the Giants, whose draft is conducted by general manager Jerry Reese (and he hasn't missed on a single pick in the last two years), are drawing rave notices from around the league. The team has a policy of not saying anything, generally, nothing good or bad.

Still, the buzz created by the team's six picks through the first four rounds has been somewhat surprising, and might indicate more help for an already sound and solid squad.

The first-round choice, wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, has been projected by scouting sources as "a 60- to 65-catch rookie." He might well win a starting job, or at least become the third receiver, with speed and good size (6-feet-1, 210).

A pair of second-rounders, linebacker Clint Sintim and tackle Will Beatty, play positions of need and both should earn roster spots as well as playing time.

Two players went to the Giants in the third round, 6-6, 230-pound receiver Ramses Barden and 6-3, 245-pound tight end Travis Beckum, and they should play as well. The final athlete in the Giants' "pick six" was running back Andre Brown, the fourth-round choice. He has size and power and could well become the next back in when superstar starter Brandon Jacobs needs a rest.

Did the Giants draft well? Every team insists it had a great weekend, but those who seem to know point to the Giants' list as one of the best.
