--The Giants placed tackle Shane Olivea on injured reserve. So much was expected after he started 57 of a possible 60 games for the San Diego Chargers. He had a back injury early in camp and it became obvious that he wasn't healing (or perhaps was in no hurry).

--Wide receiver Plaxico Burress gets a little testy when someone asks him about his ankle injury. "I wouldn't say injury," he says. "I can get out there and run around and do some of the things that I want to do. So it's basically soreness. It's not what I had last year."

Head coach Tom Coughlin inadvertently used a pun when talking about the temperamental Burress, who finally decided to use orthotics in his football shoes after six months of refusing. "It's a step in the right direction," he said. Ouch!

--It appears as though David Carr is overtaking Anthony Wright as the Giants' backup quarterback to Eli Manning. Position coach Chris Palmer has been working with him diligently, and the two are familiar with each other since Palmer was the quarterbacks coach in Houston when the expansion Texans made Carr the NFL's first overall draft pick in 2002. "He's like a lot of kids," Palmer says. "He lost his confidence." Getting sacked 72 times as a rookie can do that to a guy.
