The Giants appear to be finished with free agency, although there might be an unrestricted free agent or two lurking in the background. What seems to be far more crucial at the moment is making a decision on a new wide receiver, since it would appear that Plaxico Burress is not going to be available for the start of the 2009 season and possibly longer.
Trades with Cleveland (for Braylon Edwards) and Arizona (for Anquan Boldin) have not materialized, and it seems that they'll have to muddle through with what they have plus what they can draft. It will be paramount in the interests of the offense to decide the matter quickly, if for no other reason than to identity targets to starting QB Eli Manning.
TEAM NEEDS/OFFSEASON STRATEGY
The Giants seem to have re-signed all the veteran free agents they wanted to re-sign, with the probable exception of guard/center Grey Ruegamer. But he is not listed on the current "up to date" roster and it is possible the Giants are not all that interested. Similarly veteran WR Amani Toomer, the team's all-time leading receiver, can no longer be found on the roster. He has almost certainly been dispatched, although it is still possible Ruegamer is in their plans.
Interestingly, the defection of RB Derrick Ward (to Tampa Bay) has caused a few ripples of concern in the coaching staff. The starter, of course, is Brandon Jacobs, but he has yet to maintain playing health for a full season. Behind him now are Ahmad Bradshaw and the virtually untested Danny Ware, which might indicate interest in a rookie running back in the first few rounds.
TEAM NEEDS
1. Wide receiver: Despite the depth chart seemingly showing a large supply of receivers, the quality is not satisfactory without Plaxico Burress. And with Burress official released, the Giants' top need is a glaring need for deep speed.
2. Running back: Not entirely comfortable with the depth behind Brandon Jacobs, the Giants might take a flyer with a rookie. If Knowshon Moreno is there in the first round (doubtful) it would be a no-brainer; if not, they seem to have their eyes on Virginia's Cedric Peerman, a 5-9, 210-pound "Tiki Barber look-alike" who has been timed in 4.41 for the 40-yard dash.
3. Linebacker: The Giants can use another outside or middle linebacker, and in this case perhaps the latter. Chase Blackburn, who was seen as the successor to Antonio Pierce, seems to have reached a plateau after four years and in 2008 showed a surprising lack of lateral quickness.
