New York Giants Strategy and Personnel 2008-08-25
--For the second consecutive exhibition game, Giants starting tight end Kevin Boss didn't catch a single pass. In fact, the only tight end with a reception vs. the Jets was Darcy Johnson, a backup, who had one grab for 10 yards.

--It appears David Carr has won the backup quarterback job, leaving the coaching staff to determine whether journeyman Anthony Wright or rookie Andre Woodson will "man the clipboard" during the season. Carr played most of the second half and took the team to its only touchdown drive.

--First-round draft pick Kenny Phillips, a free safety, had three notable plays in the third preseason game, including one in which he jammed the intended receiver so hard at the line of scrimmage that the route was ruined. In all, he had four tackles (two solo) and defended a pass.

BATTLE FRONTS: Still searching for backups on the D-line and O-line, the Giants prepared to try DT Jay Alford at end to compete with veteran free agent Renaldo Wynn and a few rookies, Wallace Gilberry and Alex Morrow. Either way, however, Alford has a job.

ROOKIE REPORT: FS Kenny Phillips is zeroing in on the starting job when the season starts ... CB Terrell Thomas is making an impact and will be the first sub corner as well as the possible nickel corner ... WR Mario Manningham is still injured (strained quad) ... LB Bryan Kehl is making an impression and will make the team as a backup at both OLB positions ... LB Jonathan Goff (fractured transverse process) is healing ... QB Andre Woodson got his first action Aug. 18 against Cleveland, but misfired on his only pass attempt.

INJURY REPORT: DE Osi Umenyiora will miss the entire 2008 season after suffering a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee against the Jets. He is scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday.

--K Lawrence Tynes (knee) is now reported likely to miss two to four games into the season, which leaves the Giants with free agent Josh Huston (0-for-2 in field-goal tries) or a veteran. Former Giant kicker Jay Feely is available, having been released by Miami.

--WR Amani Toomer (knee) returned to practice Wednesday ... WR Steve Smith (groin) returned to practice Wednesday ... WR Mario Manningham (quad) returned to practice Wednesday ... SLB Mathias Kiwanuka (groin) should be all right ... Rookie MLB Jonathan Goff (transverse process) could miss the opening six weeks ... CB Sam Madison (sports hernia) hasn't practiced much the last few weeks ... CB-S R.W. McQuarters (hip flexor) is being rested.

--RB Kay-Jay Harris (foot/ankle) was placed on injured reserve.
