Rookie camp not just for rookies

Most people figured that the selection of QB Rhett Bomar two weeks ago spelled the end of the line for Andre' Woodson. Bomar represents the second straight year that the Giants have drafted a "project" quarterback, one they want to develop over time.

Turns out Bomar and Woodson will get to go head-to-head a lot sooner than some might have imagined.

Even though he's in his second year with the Giants , Woodson will participate in this weekend's rookie minicamp. Because he spent all of last season on the practice squad for the Giants and didn't accrue any pension credits, he's allowed to take part in the action tomorrow and Saturday.

Obviously there's only room on the roster for one No. 3 quarterback -- if that, since the Giants went all of last year with only two activated -- so it seems unlikely that both Woodson and Bomar will be wearing Giants unis once the season starts.

Woodson spent the last year completely overhauling his mechanics.

"The way I'm throwing the ball is almost totally different now," he told the Lexington Herald-Leader back in February. "In my old motion, my elbow would come up first, then the Football would come up. They got rid of the elbow coming up; now I just bring the Football up. It's just a much faster motion getting rid of the ball."

The last we saw of Woodson, though, his throwing mechanics weren't the problem. In the preseason finale against the Patriots he was in the game for a handful of snaps and after he muffed two of them, he was taken out of the game.

He gets another shot to impress beginning Friday.

By the way, here's what GM Jerry Reese said of Bomar and Woodson after the draft:

"We always talk about the quarterback situation, developing a quarterback. We drafted (Andre) Woodson last year. We still like Woodson. I know people will start to write him off right away, but that is not true. Who knows how long David Carr will be here. So there will be a lot of competition at that position. It was too much value at the time for us to pass (Bomar) up."

Wonder which QB gets to throw the first ever Giants pass to Hakeem Nicks???
